In addition to farming, forestry is another large local employer. The Forestry Commission manage most of the forests in Tarset including part of England's largest forest—Kielder Forest. The coniferous trees includes spruces, pines, larches and firs. There are smaller areas with beech, birch, cherry, oak and rowan.
The large woods are the home to a large population of red squirrels, roe deer, owls and other birds of prey.
The forests not only produce wood for the construction and energy industries, but are important local visitor attractions in their own right.
